Claude Plan Comparison: Free, Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise Side by Side

“I want to use Claude, but with this many plans I don’t know which to pick.” “What’s the actual difference between Pro and Max?” “For a team — Team or Enterprise?” — plan selection is where most people get stuck.

Claude has five plans: three for individuals (Free, Pro, Max) and two for organizations (Team, Enterprise). This article puts them side by side and gives you a clear way to pick. For pricing details specifically see Claude Pricing Guide.

All five plans at a glance

※ “Extended Thinking” applies to legacy models like Sonnet 4.6 and Haiku 4.5. The latest Opus 4.7 doesn’t support extended thinking — instead, Claude makes its own decision about whether to think via Adaptive Thinking.

Free plan

Sign-up gets you in. Best for “I just want to try Claude” or “I want to see what it can do”.

What you can do

  • Conversation with Claude Sonnet 4.6 (drafting, translation, summarization, Q&A)
  • Image and PDF upload + analysis
  • Projects (up to 5)
  • Artifacts (in-line preview / download for documents and spreadsheets)
  • File generation (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • External connectors (Google Drive, etc.)
  • Web search (basic)
  • Skills (a “save reusable workflow” feature — notable because it’s paid-only on ChatGPT, but free here as of April 2026)

Limits

  • Daily message cap (varies with message length and complexity)
  • Stricter limits during peak hours
  • No Opus 4.7
  • Extended Thinking is heavily limited; no Research feature
  • Conversations may be used for training

Best for

  • First-time AI users
  • A few queries a week — light research, writing checks
  • Anyone evaluating Claude before paying

For per-plan usage limits see Claude Usage Limits Explained.

Pro ($20/month)

At $20/month (~$16.67/month if you go annual), this is the mainstream individual plan.

Pro’s biggest wins

The two things that matter most are “5× usage” and “Opus 4.7 access”. The 5× usage means daily business use rarely hits limits. Opus 4.7 (Opus 4.6 still selectable) lifts quality on long-document analysis, complex judgment, and high-precision translation. Pro also unlocks Claude Code and Cowork.

Annual is cheaper

Annual costs $200/year (~$16.67/month, $40/year savings vs monthly).

Best for

  • Daily Claude users for work
  • People who want Claude drafting their minutes, reports, and proposals
  • Research-heavy roles
  • Anyone handling sensitive content who wants the training opt-out

For a deeper Free vs Pro decision tree see Claude Free vs Pro.

Max ($100 / $200/month)

For people who blow through Pro or who use Claude Code / Cowork intensively. Two tiers.

What Max adds vs Pro

Monthly$20$100$200
Usage5× Free25× Free100× Free
PriorityPriority accessHighest priorityZero-latency priority
Claude CodeAvailableFull accessFull access

Choosing Max 5x vs Max 20x

  • Max 5x ($100/month): daily Claude Code user but not all-day. The natural step up from “Pro keeps blocking me”.
  • Max 20x ($200/month): all-day Claude Code use. “Zero-latency priority” effectively eliminates wait time during peak hours.

What is Cowork?

Cowork is a feature available on Pro and above that lets Claude work autonomously in the background — “analyze these 20 data files and write me a report” type tasks where it goes through the steps without prompting.

Notes

  • Max is monthly-only — no annual option
  • $100–$200/month is real money, but if Claude Code is core to how you work, the math usually works

For Claude Code pricing details see Claude Code Pricing.

Team ($25+/seat/month)

For teams of 5+. Two seat types — Standard and Premium — and you can mix them within one team.

Standard vs Premium

ItemStandardPremium
Monthly per seat$25$125
Annual per seat (monthly)$20$100
UsagePro-equivalentMax-equivalent
Claude CodeAvailableFull access

SSO

Team admin features

  • Admin console — add / remove members, see usage
  • Consolidated billing — one card, whole team
  • Training-data control — team conversations not used for training
  • Domain authentication — restrict joining to a specific email domain

Minimum 5 seats

Below 5 seats, individual Pro / Max is more practical.

Best for

  • 5+ person departments using AI daily
  • Centralized usage visibility
  • Single bill for accounting simplicity
  • Hard requirement to keep data out of training

Enterprise

For larger organizations or environments with strict security and compliance requirements. Pricing is negotiated.

Decision flowchart

Walk through these questions in order:

Q1. How many people will use it?

  • 1 person → Q2
  • 2–4 people → individual Pro / Max each (Team requires 5+)
  • 5+ people → Q4
  • 100+ people → consider Enterprise

Q2. How often?

  • 1–2 times/week → Free
  • Daily → Q3

Q3. Are you hitting Pro’s usage limit often?

  • Not yet on Pro / not hitting limits → Pro (~$20/month)
  • Hitting limits often → Max 5x (~$100/month)
  • All-day use → Max 20x (~$200/month)

Q4. What admin features does the team need?

  • Basic management + consolidated billing → Team Standard
  • Heavy use (Max-equivalent quota) → Team Premium
  • Strong security / SLA requirements → Enterprise

Default if you can’t decide

Start with Pro. $20/month gives you everything except enterprise admin, and you can upgrade to Max if usage outgrows Pro. Cancel anytime, no penalty.

FAQ

How many Claude plans are there?

Five: three for individuals (Free, Pro, Max) and two for organizations (Team, Enterprise).

What is the difference between Pro and Max?

Pro is $20/month with 5× the Free usage. Max comes in two tiers — $100/month (5× Pro) and $200/month (20× Pro). Both Pro and Max include Claude Code and Cowork; Max gives you significantly more headroom.

Which plan should a team use?

Teams of 5+ should look at Team — Standard ($25/seat/month) or Premium ($125/seat/month) — for admin console and consolidated billing. Below 5 people, individual Pro / Max subscriptions are usually more practical.

Is the Free plan enough?

For light research or writing checks, yes — and Skills (paid-only on ChatGPT) is free on Claude, which is genuinely valuable. But Free has daily limits and reduced priority during peak hours, so daily business use generally needs Pro+.

Summary

  • Free — for trying it. 1–2x/week light use is fine here.
  • Pro (~$20/month) — the individual default. Daily users start here.
  • Max (~$100–200/month) — heavy use or serious Claude Code adoption.
  • Team (~$25–125/seat/month) — 5+ people, with admin and consolidated billing.
  • Enterprise (contact sales) — large or high-compliance organizations.

When in doubt: Free → Pro when daily use kicks in → Max only if Pro can’t keep up. That’s the lowest-risk path.
