The short answer: Claude Code itself doesn’t have a separate price tag. It runs against the usage included with your Claude paid plan (Pro, Max, or Team). It is not on Free — the cheapest entry point is Pro at $20/month. The plan you pick changes how much and how comfortably you can use it. Below is the full breakdown.
What Claude Code is
Claude Code is Anthropic’s AI coding agent, designed to run inside your terminal. It can read and edit files on your machine and reason about an entire project — handing off real work to the AI rather than copy-pasting from a chat.
The big difference vs. browser Claude is that Claude Code can read and write files on your computer directly. You point it at a project, give it a goal, and it executes. You don’t pay for it as a separate product — it consumes the same usage allowance as the rest of your Claude plan.

What Pro covers
- Occasional file editing and project tidying — fine

If you actually use Claude Code as part of how you work, Max is the right tier — it’s effectively built around Claude Code’s usage. Cowork (autonomous task collaboration) is available on Pro and up, but Max gives you the headroom to actually use it.

Picking Max 5x vs Max 20x
- Max 5x: daily Claude Code use, but not all-day every day
- Max 20x: all-day Claude Code, multiple parallel projects
“Zero-latency priority” on Max 20x effectively removes wait time during peak hours. If your throughput-per-hour matters, the cost makes sense.

May 2026 update — bigger limits, same price
On May 6, 2026 (announced at the Code with Claude 2026 conference) Anthropic shipped a set of changes that effectively make Claude Code a better deal at the same monthly cost.
Allowance changes (May 6, 2026 PT)
- 5-hour rate limits doubled for Pro / Max / Team / seat-based Enterprise — you can sprint harder before hitting a cap
- Peak-hour throttling removed on Pro and Max — no more 9 AM – 3 PM dip
- Claude Opus API rate limits raised significantly — more headroom for API-driven Claude Code usage
- Weekly limits unchanged — total weekly ceilings stay the same, so heavy week-long use is still bounded
Desktop app redesign (April 14, 2026 PT)
A few weeks earlier, on April 14, the Claude Code desktop app was rebuilt from the ground up:
- Sidebar for parallel sessions — group by project or status, switch fast
- Drag-and-drop workspace — arrange terminal, preview, diff, and chat in whatever layout suits you
- Integrated terminal and file editor — run builds, spot-edit files without leaving the app
- Faster diff viewer and expanded previews (HTML, PDF, local server output)
- SSH on Mac — Mac joins Linux for remote-machine sessions
- Side chats ( ⌘+; / Ctrl+; ) — branch a quick question off the main thread without polluting context
