Claude Code Pricing: How Much Does It Cost on Pro, Max, and Team?
Table of contents 15 items
“I want to try Claude Code, but how much does it cost?” “Is there a free option?” — fair questions.
The short answer: Claude Code itself doesn’t have a separate price tag. It runs against the usage included with your Claude paid plan (Pro, Max, or Team). It is not on Free — the cheapest entry point is Pro at $20/month. The plan you pick changes how much and how comfortably you can use it. Below is the full breakdown.
What Claude Code is
Claude Code is Anthropic’s AI coding agent, designed to run inside your terminal. It can read and edit files on your machine and reason about an entire project — handing off real work to the AI rather than copy-pasting from a chat.
The big difference vs. browser Claude is that Claude Code can read and write files on your computer directly. You point it at a project, give it a goal, and it executes. You don’t pay for it as a separate product — it consumes the same usage allowance as the rest of your Claude plan.
Claude Code plans at a glance
April 2026:
| Plan | Monthly | Claude Code access | Usage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | Not available | — | Trying chat |
| Pro | $20 | Available | 5× Free | A few uses per week |
| Max 5x | $100 | Full access | 5× Pro | Daily user |
| Max 20x | $200 | Full access | 20× Pro | Power user |
| Team Standard | $25/seat | Available | Pro-equivalent | Team baseline |
| Team Premium | $125/seat | Full access | Max-equivalent | Team heavy use |
| Enterprise | Contact sales | Full access | Custom | Large orgs |
Free — what’s not available
Free does not include Claude Code. Pro ($20/month) is the floor.
Free only gets you browser Claude. If you specifically want Claude Code, plan on Pro at minimum.
For per-plan usage details see Claude Usage Limits Explained.
Pro ($20/month) Claude Code
Pro is the realistic entry point for actually using Claude Code.
Pro highlights
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Monthly | $20 (annual $200/yr — ~$16.67/month) |
| Claude Code | Available |
| Usage | ~5× Free |
| Available models | Opus 4.7, Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6, Haiku 4.5 |
| Reset window | ~5 hours |
What Pro covers
- Occasional file editing and project tidying — fine
- Opus 4.7 (latest top-tier) is available, but burns usage fast
- “Many hours every day” use will hit limits
When you start hitting Pro’s limits regularly, that’s the signal to look at Max.
Max ($100 / $200/month) Claude Code
If you actually use Claude Code as part of how you work, Max is the right tier — it’s effectively built around Claude Code’s usage. Cowork (autonomous task collaboration) is available on Pro and up, but Max gives you the headroom to actually use it.
| Item | Max 5x | Max 20x |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $100 | $200 |
| Usage | 5× Pro | 20× Pro |
| Priority | Highest | Zero-latency |
| Claude Code | Full access | Full access |
| Annual | Not offered | Not offered |
Picking Max 5x vs Max 20x
- Max 5x: daily Claude Code use, but not all-day every day
- Max 20x: all-day Claude Code, multiple parallel projects
“Zero-latency priority” on Max 20x effectively removes wait time during peak hours. If your throughput-per-hour matters, the cost makes sense.
Team and Enterprise
If you’re rolling Claude Code out to a team:
Team
| Seat type | Per seat per month | Claude Code | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $25 | Available | Baseline team features |
| Premium | $125 | Full access | Max-equivalent usage + admin |
- Minimum 5 seats
- Admin console — see member usage
- Consolidated billing simplifies expense management
Enterprise
- Negotiated pricing
- 99.99% SLA
- Advanced security and audit logs
- Dedicated support
Enterprise is appropriate for large rollouts or heavily regulated industries (finance, healthcare).

Pricing in plain dollars
All prices are USD. Tax may be added depending on your jurisdiction.
| Plan | Monthly (USD, excl. tax) |
|---|---|
| Pro | $20 |
| Max 5x | $100 |
| Max 20x | $200 |
| Team Standard | $25/seat |
| Team Premium | $125/seat |
Build in some buffer when budgeting — your local taxes and FX exposure (if you’re billed in USD from outside the US) can add a few percent.
Payment
Claude pays via credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover). PayPal, bank transfer, and convenience-store payment are not supported.
- Monthly plans auto-renew each month
- Annual (Pro only) charges $200 up front
- Max is monthly-only
For payment details, receipts, and tax invoices, see Claude Pricing Guide.
Picking the right plan
Match your Claude Code usage frequency to a plan:
| Usage frequency | Plan | Approx. monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Just want to try Claude | Free | $0 |
| A few sessions a week | Pro | $20 |
| Daily | Max 5x | $100 |
| All day, every day | Max 20x | $200 |
| Team (5+) | Team | $25+/seat |
Decision rule of thumb
The lowest-risk path is “start on Pro, upgrade to Max when limits start blocking you”. Pro annual ($200/year) drops the effective rate to ~$16.67/month if you commit upfront.

FAQ
Is Claude Code free?
No. Claude Code requires Pro ($20/month) or above. It is not available on the Free plan.
How much does Claude Code itself cost?
There is no separate Claude Code subscription. It draws against the usage allowance of your Claude plan. Pro is $20/month, Max is $100–$200/month.
Can I use Opus 4.7 in Claude Code?
Yes — Pro and above include Opus 4.7 (released April 16, 2026); Opus 4.6 is also still selectable. Opus consumes usage faster, so for heavy use a Max plan is more practical.
Summary
- Claude Code itself isn’t a separate product — it draws on your Claude plan’s usage
- Free — Claude Code is unavailable
- Pro (~$20/month) — the realistic entry point; great for a few sessions a week
- Max (~$100–200/month) — for serious daily use
- Team / Enterprise — for team and organizational rollouts
Start at Pro and upgrade to Max if and when usage demands it.
