  • File uploads (within limits)
  • Projects (up to 5)
  • Artifacts (preview / download docs and spreadsheets in line)
  • File generation (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

  • Extended thinking is heavily limited (vs. paid). Research is unavailable.

Pro ($20/month)

The mainstream individual plan. $20/month, or $200/year (~$16.67/month equivalent). Roughly 5× the usage of Free, plus access to more models.

What Pro adds

  • ~5× the message allowance
  • Claude Opus 4.7 access (latest top-tier; Opus 4.6 also still available)

Payment methods

Cards accepted

As of April 2026, Claude paid plans take credit cards only:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • Discover

PayPal, bank transfer, and convenience-store payment are not supported.

Debit / prepaid cards?

Some debit and prepaid cards work, but it isn’t officially supported. If yours fails, fall back to a regular credit card.

Card declined?

If you see “your card is not supported for this type of purchase”:

  1. Recheck card number, expiry, CVC
  2. Try a different card brand
  3. Make sure your bank doesn’t block international online payments
  4. Ask your issuer to allow Stripe-processed online payments

Receipts and invoices

Auto-emailed after each charge

Every time you’re charged, an email titled “Your receipt from Anthropic” lands in your inbox with the PDF receipt and invoice attached.

Downloading past receipts

If you’ve lost the email, or want multiple months in one go:

  1. Sign in to Claude.ai
  2. Click your account icon (bottom-left) → Settings
  3. Open Billing in the left menu
  4. Find the relevant date in the billing history
  5. Click View on the right
  6. Download as PDF

Changing the billing name

To change the company name on the receipt, update the Billing information on the Billing page. The next download will reflect the new name.

Older receipts not showing

Receipts older than a few months are sometimes archived from the UI. Open a Claude support ticket to retrieve them.

Tax invoices

Tax invoice content varies by jurisdiction. If you need a specific format for your local tax authority — for example, Japanese qualified invoices (適格請求書) — confirm with your finance team or accountant. As of April 2026, Anthropic is registered as a Japanese qualified invoice issuer (registration number T7700150134388), and Japanese qualified invoices can be downloaded directly from the Billing page.

Upgrading and downgrading

Upgrade (move to a higher tier)

Go to Settings → Billing. The cost difference is prorated — for example, going Free → Pro mid-month only charges for the remaining days.

Downgrade

Go to Settings → Billing. The downgrade takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you keep your current tier until then.

Annual → monthly

You can’t switch from annual to monthly mid-term. Switch before your annual renewal.

  2. Click your account icon (bottom-left) → Settings
  3. Open Billing

Things to watch

  • Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid the next charge
  • Your account isn’t deleted on cancellation — conversation history and Projects remain (within Free limits)

Refund policy

Generally non-refundable

Claude plans — both monthly and annual — are not prorated for early cancellation. Cancelling mid-period does not refund the remainder.

Wrongly subscribed / accidental purchases

If you signed up by mistake or were charged unexpectedly, a refund may be granted if you act quickly:

  2. Click Get help
  3. Click Send us a message
  4. Choose Claude Refund Request
  5. Pick a reason and confirm eligibility

The decision is at Anthropic’s discretion. Speed matters. If you bought through the iOS app, contact Apple Support; for the Android app, contact Google Support.

Going over your limit — Extra usage

Pro, Max, and Team plans let you buy extra usage when you’ve hit your normal limit and need to keep going.

Buying extra usage

  1. Open Settings → Usage
  2. Click Enable under “Extra usage”
  3. Click Add funds and enter an amount
  4. Click Purchase

You can also turn on auto-reload — when your remaining balance drops below a threshold, more is purchased automatically.

Cost and cap

  • Extra usage is billed at API metered rates
  • $2,000/day maximum
  • If you originally subscribed via the mobile app, you can only enable extra usage from the web

Choosing the right plan

For a deeper Free vs Pro decision framework, see Claude Free vs Pro.

If you…Plan
Just want to try itFree
Use Claude daily as an individualPro
Hit Pro’s limit constantlyMax 5x
Use Claude Code heavilyMax 5x or Max 20x
Run Claude across a 5+ person teamTeam Standard
Run heavy team usage with admin needsTeam Premium
100+ users, strict security requirementsEnterprise

Pro vs Max as a rule of thumb: when “you’ve hit your limit” starts showing up routinely, that’s the signal to look at Max. For typical daily business use, Pro is enough.

Summary

  • Free — limited usage, good for trying it
  • Pro — $20/month; the workhorse plan for daily individual use
  • Max 5x / 20x — $100–$200/month; for heavy use or Claude Code
  • Team — 5+ seats; consolidated billing and admin
  • Enterprise — for larger or compliance-heavy deployments

Receipts are downloadable from Billing, and emailed after each charge. Cancellation is open any time — but refunds are generally not given, so cancel before renewal if you’re stepping away.

Start on Free, move to Pro when you start to feel the limits, and step up further only when needed.
