Breaking: ChatGPT's Knowledge Cutoff Has Moved to June 2024

Update — January 30, 2025

The official release notes have been published.

A summary of what’s new follows.

GPT-4o updates in ChatGPT (January 29, 2025)

OpenAI made several updates to GPT-4o. The model is overall smarter, has more recent knowledge, and is better at understanding and analyzing image uploads.

More up-to-date knowledge

By extending the training data cutoff from November 2023 to June 2024, GPT-4o can now provide more relevant, current, and contextually grounded answers. It is especially better at questions about cultural and social trends and recent research. With the new dataset, web-search framing has also become more efficient and effective.

Deeper image understanding and analysis

GPT-4o has improved at interpreting and responding to visual input, with gains on multimodal evaluations like MMMU and MathVista. Specifically, it is stronger at:

  • Interpreting spatial relationships within images
  • Analyzing complex diagrams and charts
  • Integrating visual information with text

This translates into more accurate advice on spatial planning and design layout, and better support for mathematical and technical problems that involve visual information.

Stronger STEM — math, science, and programming

GPT-4o is better at solving math, science, and coding problems. Scores have improved on academic benchmarks like GPQA and MATH, allowing it to handle more advanced questions. MMLU (a comprehensive evaluation of language understanding, knowledge breadth, and reasoning) scores have also gone up, raising its ability to solve more complex problems across domains.

Slightly more emoji ⬆️

GPT-4o now uses a few more emoji than before — and especially so when you use them in conversation ✨. OpenAI is welcoming feedback on emoji usage.

GPT-4o with June cutoff has returned inside ChatGPT

over the past few weeks it would come and go for me, but this time it works across all my accounts so it could be rolling out for everyone 👀 https://t.co/TTytiPSc7a pic.twitter.com/Wewbv06AgC

After seeing the post above, I checked it directly.

When asked, the model responded with “June 2024,” matching the X post above.

To verify behavior on 2024 information without using browsing, I built a custom GPT with web search disabled and asked it about events that happened up to June 2024.

(Half-correct on some questions.)

It’s safe to conclude that the knowledge cutoff has moved from October 2023 to June 2024. Let’s also confirm via the official announcement.
